Society Against the State: Essays in Political Anthropology
Published in Paperback by Zone Books (04 October, 1989)
Average review score:

An eye-openerAlthough a work of anthropology, it helps if you have a background in philosophy, as Pierre Clastres clearly does. Using the "primitive" tribes of South America, Clastres raises fascinating questions about the nature of society. According to him, not all societies are constructed on a foundation of power-play. A sensitive reading of this book will force you to re-evaluate the society you're sitting in (and if you're reading this, it doesn't matter who you are: Clastres' has us pinned.)

Soldados de la Memoria: Imagenes y Hombres de la Guerra del Paraguay
Published in Paperback by Planeta (October, 2000)
Average review score:

William WarnerThis is an excellent book. It captures the images of the almost unknown conflict in the swamps of Paraguay in the 1860's. Contemporay with the American civil war this war was the largest and bloodiest conflict in South America. The war pitted Paraguay against Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. This book captures the war in photographs, water colours and sketches. Similar to the photographs made avalable by Mathew Brady of the Civil War, the book captures images and the aftermath of battles and camp life of the the conflict. For those who are intersted in this period, this book is a valuable reference.

Song of La Selva: A Story of a Costa Rican Rain Forest (The Nature Conservancy)
Published in Hardcover by Soundprints Corp Audio (September, 1998)
Average review score:

Song of La SelvaThis book is a wonderful introduction to the rain forest and poison dart frogs for children. The story takes you through the life of a strawberry poison dart frog (my daughter Jessie's favorite frog) from egg to adult. The story is excellent and the pictures are fantastic! I have been to La Selva twice so I can say that the story and pictures are realistic. A picture quiz at the end of the book will keep your eyes open for other rain forest wildlife living in the pictures of this wonderful book. I instruct environmental education programs and use this book often. Enjoy!

Incredibly useful and informative Ski and Snowboard guideI was lucky enough to cross paths with Chris at Villarrica-Pucon. He is an excellent skier and knows what he is doing in the backcountry. His guide covers everything from trail and hotel descriptions to detailed instructions for backcountry excursions at every area. Skiers and snowboarders of every ability and budget will find this guide useful. I found his guide indispensable during my ski trips in Chile and Argentina

South America: River Trips
Published in Paperback by Bradt Enterprises (June, 1981)
Average review score:

A pitty it is out of printIt is too bad it is out of print. If you can get a used copy, get it! There is a second volume by a different set of writers that covers the rivers of the Guyanas, most notably how to do river trips in Suriname. The only downside is that this book is from the early 1980s and south america has changed quite a bit. Most of the rivers described are unchanged, but some have been dammed, and government access rules have changed. The travelling-in-the-rough crowd is badly in need of a revised version of this volume. This book, together with Joe Kane's "Running the Amazon" should be enough to get any weekend canoe-tripper thinking about future travels to the "continent of rivers".

South American Animals
Published in Library Binding by Morrow Junior (June, 1999)
Average review score:

A celebration of wildlifeCaroline Arnold's "South American Animals" is a great way to introduce children to the amazing wildlife of this vast continent. Although the book's length of 48 pages limits the amount of information that the author can share, the straightforward text and beautiful full-color photographs make this book a good addition to the family library.
The animals discussed in the book are grouped according to four geographic regions: forests, mountains, grasslands, and the water's edge. The species pictured include the toucan, the spider monkey, the guanaco, and many more. The book is full of stunning images: the colorful coils of the emerald tree boa, the predatory beauty of the jaguar, the majesty of the Andean condor in flight. Read the book and marvel at the wonders of nature.

South American Birds: A Photographic Aid to Identification

Alex's reviewThis book is probably the most complete book with photos of South American birds. It's a bible! I can't understand why it's out of print...

South and Central America Including Mexico (Traveller's Literary Companion)
Published in Paperback by Passport Books (March, 1995)

A treat! From Planeta Journal - Anyone book lover traveling in Latin America should carry a copy of this compilation of stories and poems. Each country receives a lively description as well as an index of native and foreign authors who wrote about local life. Wilson provides bibliographic details about the authors whose names are or should be familiar - Isabel Allende, Paul Bowles, Ernesto Cardenal, Bruce Chatwin, Ariel Dorfman, Graham Greene, W.H. Hudson, Jorge Ibarguengoitia, Pablo Neruda and Kurt Vonnegut. The Traveller's Companion is akin to walking into a beautiful old bookstore with plenty of time and plenty of money to dive into the words of places that despite the distance remain close at heart. Kudos to Wilson for giving us such a treat.
A SLAVE'S PLACE brings the Black Atlantic into Brazil whilst highlighting the interchanges that also emphasise Brazil's vital place in the Black Atlantic. A fresh perspective to the growing literature on slavery.
